InnerVoice: Communication
by iTherapy, LLc

InnerVoice 3.0 makes learning to communicate fun for people on the autism spectrum -- or just about anyone else! Watch your pictures, line drawings, or toys come to life, as they speak in a variety of voices, helping you see and hear the relationships among pictures, symbols, speech, and writing.

InnerVoice 3.0 can function as a engaging language and literacy learning tool, as a powerful communication app, or as an entertaining, interactive toy that creates a unique social learning experience.

InnerVoice 3.0 shows you that pictures, symbols, writing, and speech are all ways that people can send and receive language-based messages -- all the while, stimulating your interest, increasing your engagement, and capturing your attention with its amazing photo-animation and text-to-speech software.

SPEAK -- see your words appear in the speech bubble: touch the avatar’s mouth or the speech bubble and listen to the avatar say your words aloud.

TYPE -- watch your words appear in the speech bubble: touch the avatar’s mouth or the speech bubble and listen to the avatar say your words aloud.

PHOTOGRAPH -- take a picture and use the simple button-editing system to add a pre-recorded or text-to-speech label: touch the avatar’s mouth or the buttons; then watch and listen to the avatar label your pictures aloud.

SYMBOLIZE -- use the SmartySymbols and the simple button-editing system to add a pre-recorded or text-to-speech label to your favorite symbols: touch the avatar’s mouth or the buttons; then watch and listen to the avatar label your pictures aloud.

HANDWRITE -- download a third-party handwriting keyboard app; then watch your handwriting change into legible text in the speech bubble: touch the speech bubble and hear your handwriting converted to speech!

PROMPT -- use InnerVoice 3.0’s Remote Prompting feature, which allows a teacher to send video-modeled prompts via Bluetooth: watch the avatar spontaneously give cues, as if your mirror reflection were speaking to you! (Stay tuned for Remote Prompting ideas on our website!)

LEARN -- InnerVoice 3.0 helps you learn language in a way that’s comfortable for you whether that be through pictures, symbols, writing, or speech.

Vast:
Video Assisted Speech Technology

VAST Autism 1 – Core, VAST Pre-Speech and VAST Songs (apps available from iTunes) combines best practices, video modeling, music therapy, and literacy with auditory cues to provide unprecedented support for the development of vocabulary, word combinations, and communication. What this means is that students simply watch a video of a syllable, word, phrase, exercise, functional activity, or a song being produced, see the visual representation, and hear it auditorily. It’s like watching a close-up movie of someone talking, singing, or performing oral-motor activities with subtitles. The VAST technique is also extremely effective in providing specialized therapy to help individuals with motor-planning disorders, non-fluent aphasia, apraxia, deaf and hard-of-hearing, speak for themselves.

Apps For Autism

Lois believes that all persons on the spectrum can learn how to use technology in a way that is relevant to them. She shares important tips on how to use apps responsibly and effectively by maintaining a child-centered, team approach to teaching and learning, taking into account the individual’s interests, strengths/challenges, vision, motor planning, attention, sensory processing, memory,

cognitive ability, environment, and access to tools. Lois also coaches adults on how they can use prompting and reinforcement techniques to help establish and generalize skills learned, until students are able to consistently demonstrate the skills in various environments (home, school, etc.).

Speech in Action

Children, particularly those on the autism spectrum, are able to acquire communication skills much more easily when their learning incorporates movement. Even very simple actions, such as tapping and hand-clapping, can have a noticeable impact on their speech and language development. Speech in Action is an innovative approach to learning that

combines simple techniques from speech and language pathology with physical exercises that have been carefully designed to meet the individual child's particular needs and abilities. This practical workbook describes the approach, and how it works, and contains 90 fully-photocopiable lesson plans packed with fun and creative ideas for getting both mouth and body moving. Suitable for use either at school or at home, the activities can be dipped into in any order, and are organized by level of ability, with something for everyone.
